Retrieval practice is the act of recalling information from memory, through low-stakes testing, which strengthens long-term retention more than rereading does. This is often called the testing effect.
The research is clear that pulling an answer out of memory, rather than reviewing it again, is what makes it stick. Frequent, low-stakes quizzing is therefore a learning tool, not only an assessment one.
This is the honest case for recall having a place: used formatively, it builds memory. The caution is to not let a whole summative paper stop at recall when it means to measure understanding.
