Recall question
A recall question asks a student to reproduce something from memory, such as a definition or a list. It measures what was remembered, not what the student can do with it.
A quick test for a recall question: could a good summary of the material answer it? If yes, it is measuring memory. There is nothing wrong with that in a low-stakes check, but a paper made entirely of recall questions can feel rigorous while telling you little about understanding.
The fix is not to make tests harder but to make some questions ask students to apply, analyse, or judge, so the paper measures thinking as well as memory.
