Question type
A question type is the format a question takes and how it is answered. XAM generates eight: multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blanks, matching, sorting, short answer, long answer and essay.
The types split two ways. The objective types (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blanks, matching and sorting) have a single defined correct answer, so they grade themselves the moment a student submits. The written types (short answer, long answer and essay) ask the student to produce their own response, so they are flagged for a person to mark.
Choosing a spread of types is how a paper measures more than recall: matching and fill-in-the-blanks check terms and definitions, sorting checks sequence and classification, while long answer and essay open up explanation, reasoning and analysis. Mixing types on purpose, and pitching each at the right Bloom's level, is what separates a quiz from an assessment.
